MRI scanning requires putting the area that is to be imaged within a
magnet, and then recording the magnetic properties of the tissues
within. Images are formed on a computer screen which normally relate to
the differing proportions of water in the various tissues. For some
types of disease and some areas of the body (e.g. the limbs and head)
this can give diagnostic images with exceptional clarity of both soft
tissues and boney structures.
