Therapy for animals to treat pain
Home>Therapy
A number of different approaches can be used to help treat pain
in animals, making them more mobile and more comfortable and thus
improving the quality of life of pets with painful conditions.
In many cases a multifactorial approach works best- although pets often
do well on pain relieving medicines, they generally do better still if
other treatments are also used.
Depending on the individual, appropriate treatments may include any or
all of the following:
- surgery
- medications
- acupuncture
- exercise regimes
- physio and other techniques
- nutraceuticals
- changes in diet
- euthanasia (where successful treatment is sadly not possible and
the
animal's quality of life is inadequate)
As a vet dealing with animals that are suffering from painful
conditions on a referral basis, I can offer:
- acupuncture treatment for relief
of pain and muscle spasm
- physical therapies such as massage and
exercises to improve and
maintain mobility
- exercise regimes for rehabilitation
and to maintain fitness
- advice regarding medications
following discussion with the
animal's own vet
- advice regarding food supplements
- nutritional advice, especially with
regard to weight problems
- home visits- treating pets and horses in familiar surroundings
